Solution-Focused Counseling in Schools

"All of my counselors came to me to thank me for providing such an outstanding presenter. This very seldom occurs when staff development is offered. They also shared that they were going to view their job as counselors from a new perspective. Basically, I can summarize by saying that he was a HIT.  Thank you for working with me to locate such an outstanding presenter."
–– Karen M. Wood, Ed.D

Workshop Description
This workshop focuses on practical, solution-oriented techniques that are easily implemented in the time-conscious school environment. Through the use of humor and energetic teaching, the presenter introduces participants to an efficient model of counseling designed to move students toward positive change.

Learning Objectives

• Learn to use language and a “yes-set” vocabulary to enhance student success.
• Identify achievable student goals.
• Enable students to identify their own solutions and facilitate change.
• Immediately implement flexible solution-focused techniques.
• Maximize the effectiveness of single counseling sessions.

Presenter

Paul E. Barnes, Ph.D., NCSC, is a counselor educator at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and is the 2005 College of Education Outstanding Teaching Award recipient. A past president of the Nebraska School Counselor Association, he has taught solution-focused techniques to counselors, teachers, graduate students and mentors across the United States and has practiced solution-focused techniques with adolescents for more than nine years.
