Workshop Description
Truly improving the learning climate for students requires a long-term comprehensive effort for a school community and involves everyone in the school. As counselors and educators, we may fail to recognize social aggression because we are not always aware of what is occurring in classrooms, the school building and the community. We have to identify covert behaviors, learn the language of peer aggression and promote positive normative behaviors before we can begin to address the issues interfering with student learning. This interactive full-day workshop introduces participants to five critical steps needed to create a safer social climate for students.
Learning Objectives
• Recognize covert behavior and understand basic research about relational aggression. • Learn a body of language to address peer aggression. • Develop specific pro-social normative behaviors to promote a positive learning climate. • Learn several strategies for creating a safer social climate for students and adults.
