It’s time to begin thinking about possible candidates for the 2011 ASCA elections. Your leadership in developing and encouraging strong leaders to step-up and become candidates for national office is vital. Please help ASCA by considering seeking an elected office and by actively encouraging and recruiting talented individuals in your state to become candidates for the following ASCA offices:
President 2011-2014
Southern Regional Vice President 2011-2014
Midwestern Regional Vice President 2011-2014
Counseling Director/Coordinator Vice President 2011-2014
ASCA has made some tremendous changes in recent years, and the Governing Board is taking a more active role in leading the association through this growth. We need leaders with the energy and vision to help ASCA aspire to new heights during the next phase of its maturing process as an organization. With the guidance of the Governing Board, ASCA will continue to promote the profession of school counseling while providing individual school counselors with the resources and professional development to help them be more effective every day. Ultimately, ASCA’s efforts will result in greater benefits to students.
Board terms begin on Oct. 1 and end on Sept. 30. Most of the duties of board members can be accomplished by telephone, mail or e-mail. Board members are expected to participate in ASCA’s annual conference in June and Leadership Development Institute in July. Board members may also be asked to represent ASCA at state or regional meetings. Members of the Governing Board do not receive any compensation for their service on the board; however, they are reimbursed for travel expenses and other costs. ASCA makes every attempt to schedule travel during weekends to minimize board members’ time away from school.
New this year, the board nomination process will take place online. Those interested in running for a position on ASCA's Governing Board should apply here.
Requirements and Timeline
To run for office, candidates must be professional or retired members as state in the ASCA Bylaws. The Nominations and Elections Committee will review each individual's credentials for eligibility. The online nomination form and additional materials sent via mail must be completed by March 1, 2010.
Candidates for president-elect and counseling director/coordinator will have an opportunity to address Delegate Assembly. President-elect candidates have three minutes, and counseling director/coordinator candidates have two minutes. Candidates seeking regional vice president positions will address their respective regional caucuses for two minutes. The Delegate Assembly will be held prior to the ASCA conference in Boston, Mass. Candidate speeches will be held on Friday, July 2, 2010, beginning at approximately 9 a.m. Delegates will receive ballots to select up to three nominees for each position. The three nominees receiving the highest number of votes will be the candidates, and their names will be placed on the ballot sent to all ASCA voting members. The fourth highest will be the alternate.
Nominees will be announced during Delegate Assembly. The election will be open to all ASCA voting members in October 2010 and close in November. The new board members will be announced no later than January 2011. New board members assume office Oct. 1, 2011.
