The Guam Association of School Counselors held the 2019 GASC Conference on March 28 and 29. The conference was made possible through the partnership with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and the Guam Department of Education (GDOE) and marked a very momentous occasion for GASC as the 52nd ASCA division affiliate. Having ASCA-certified trainer Brent Burnham, ASCA board chair Cory Notestine and ASCA board assistant chair Katherine Pastor-Lorents share their wealth of knowledge and expertise was ground breaking.

The success of the GASC conference can be attributed to the contributions of many. First and foremost, we thank our community partners for their generosity and support. To Lifeworks/Rainbows for All Children, Bank of Guam, Graphic Center, Coast 360, Guam Trades Academy, Matson Guam, Ernst & Young, PSG, Pacific Sign Shop, First Hawaiian Bank, California Pizza Kitchen, Atkins Kroll Toyota, Triple J, Pacific LP Gas, iConnect, Promotion Specialties, Mobil Inc., Payless Supermarkets (Sumay), SelectCare, Jamaican Grill and the Office of Amanda Shelton, Un Dangkolo’ Na Si Yu’os Ma’ase’!

We also thank all the school counselors who attended the two-day training event. Your presence, enthusiasm and commitment to the profession were quite evident. Attendance at this year’s conference well exceeded 180 counselors, which is truly remarkable! Even counselors from our neighboring islands took part.

As we consider the problem of substance abuse in this newsletter, we hope that the conference served to help school counselors who are in the trenches deal with this very pressing concern that significantly impacts student achievement and success. Since this issue is often associated with serious academic, psychological and health problems, equipping school counselors with resources, supports, and tools will be vital in addressing the issue of substance use and misuse by students. Therefore, let us continue to invest in the professional growth of school counselors, so that we all can build a stronger and healthier Guam.
