STATE SCHOOL COUNSELOR OF THE YEAR: President Geoff Heckman and Director of Advocacy Dr. Shari Sevier recently had the great pleasure of surprising Lynn Knoch, school counselor at Lawson High School in Lawson, Mo., at an all-school assembly where Lynn learned that she is Missouri’s State School Counselor of the Year! There were plenty of cheers and tears as Lynn was honored in front of the student body. Lynn also learned that she is the Secondary School Counselor of the Year for MSCA. Lynn’s nomination will be sent to ASCA in the spring for consideration for ASCA’s National School Counselor of the Year. Congratulations, Lynn!

ASCA FINALIST: Speaking of ASCA’s National School Counselor of the Year process, our very own Geoff Heckman learned that he is one of ASCA’s Top Six School Counselors of the Year. Geoff traveled to Washington, D.C., to be interviewed by the selection committee that will determine ASCA’s National School Counselor of the Year. For MSCA, Geoff will always be our Number One!

CONGRATULATIONS to Teresa Moore (Tess) who is MSCA’s Middle School Counselor of the Year! Tess and Lynn did a great presentation of Best Practices at the Fall Conference. We’re so proud to have these wonderful school counselors represent us across the state and nationally! We also are honoring Dr. Chad Sayre as our Administrator of the Year. Dr. Sayre is principal of North Platte High School…the same high school as Geoff Heckman! Our Advocate of the Year is Stephanie Young of the Springfield Public Schools, and our Coordinator of the Year is Susan Perkins of the Columbia Public Schools. All of these wonderful individuals will be honored at our Awards Gala which will be held in February at the Missouri State Capitol.

GYSBERS/RAMP: Do you have a solid school counseling program? Are you thinking about applying for the Gysbers/RAMP Award? We’d love to have you apply. We are very excited that any Gysbers winner will now automatically be eligible for ASCA’s RAMP designation! The application is on our MSCA Awards site. MSCA is offering assistance and coaching to any school that wants to work on this award. We will come to your school to give you feedback, tips, help and all the cheering you could want; you are not alone in this process! ASCA is now giving free ASCA membership for any school counselor in the building that has been RAMP-designated for as long as the school retains RAMP status. Contact the MSCA office if you’d like more information or would like some help with this great opportunity.

TAKE TEN CONFERENCE: The MSCA Spring Take Ten Conference will take place Friday, March 2, 2018, at the newly built Drury Inn Convention Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
