Congratulations to the 2017 Texas School Counselor of the Year
By Monica Dominguez, LSSSCA SCOY Chair
At this year’s “It’s All About Me” Lone Star State School Counselor Association Conference, Cristina Nunez, Middle School Counselor from Paso del Norte K-8 School in El Paso, was named the 2017 LSSSCA School Counselor of the Year (SCOY). She was honored for her devotion to the school counseling profession and for serving as an advocate for students and helping them achieve success in school and life. View Cristina's video.
Cristina Nunez will move on to the next round as she was selected as one of six finalists that will vie for ASCA’s National School Counselor of the Year. She will be partaking in celebratory events in January in Washington, D.C.
The Lone Star State School Counselor Association School Counselor of the Year program honors the best of the best in Texas – it recognizes school counselors who are running a top-notch, comprehensive school counseling program at either the elementary, middle or high school level.
Nominations for the LSSSCA School Counselor of the year program were submitted from school districts from all parts of Texas. School counselor candidates then completed an extensive application process and were judged by a panel of counseling professionals on multiple criteria, including school counseling innovations, effective school counseling programs, leadership skills, and contributions to student achievement.
The four finalists for LSSSCA School Counselor of the Year were:
Dr. Summer Martin, Lead Counselor at Keller High School
Jennifer Madrid, Elementary Counselor at James P. Butler Elementary
Maria Angelica Morales, Elementary School Counselor at Campestre Elementary
Norma Wright, Middle School Counselor at Billy E. Dade Middle School
A special thanks to the SCOY committee for their time and dedication to the SCOY process: Chris Kent-Phelps, Tacky Box; Norma Guerra, Pflugerville ISD; Sherri Vault, Dallas ISD; Nicole Morales, Canutillo ISD; and Letitia Powell, Spring ISD.
LSSSCA’s Second Annual Conference
The Lone Star State School Counselor Association recently held its second annual school counselor conference, “It’s All About You!” on November 5-7 in Frisco, Tex. Thank you, Texas school counselors, school counselor educators, school counselor supervisors and advocates for making YOUR conference a huge success! With just under 1,100 participants, 80 breakout sessions and fun galore, this year’s conference had something for everyone. As LSSSCA continues to grow with over 1,500 members, we are excited to begin planning for the third annual conference, November 4-6, 2018 in Frisco. Join us then for “It’s All About You 2!” Visit the LSSSCA website at www.lonestarstateschoolcounselor.org to see more pictures from the conference.
