OSCA Professional Development: Breaking the Binary

In January, OSCA hosted a professional development training for our members, titled “Breaking the Binary: Creating Safe and Inclusive School Environments for Queer, Gender Non-Conforming, and Transgender Students.” Leslie Nelson, Yamille Bassi, Marissa Yang Bertucci and Kelsey Kaul, graduate students from Lewis and Clark Graduate School of Education and Counseling, kicked off the training with their presentation, “Breaking the Binary.”

Karin Moscon (in left photo), civil rights specialist at the Oregon Department of Education, presented the Oregon Guidance for School Districts to create safe environments for Oregon’s transgender students, of which she is an author.

Carrie Fuentes and Alyssa Linares (in right photo), community educators from the Sexual and Gender Minority Youth Center (SMYRC) in Portland, provided further professional development. The day ended with a panel discussion including the presenters and Rafe McCullough, Ph.D., a counselor educator in the school counseling program at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore., who has been involved in advocacy efforts in transgender communities for over 20 years.
