President’s Letter: Connecting and Learning at a Distance

By Lyn Bush | April 2020

Greetings, NCSCA members.

It seems over the last few months that we have become more connected in a distant way. Reaching out to each other for support and ways to feel connected have become our mainstay. We have continued to push out ways to connect – not only to our students and colleagues virtually, but also for ourselves professionally. Professional development has been offered to us to support our growth, especially during this change in the way we work. Broadening our learning has not only become desired, but necessary. I am happy to see that these supports will continue over the summer through professional development from ASCA and on the NCSCA website.

Summer is almost here – it will look different in so many ways to us and it remains, for most, a time away from our school job to renew our energy and remind ourselves how much we love what we do. Even though we have been out of our school buildings, our jobs didn’t stop over the past few months, and our students needed us and we needed each other – more than ever – to deal with our new normal. I know you’ve given it your all and you deserve to take care of yourself for a while.

Another support through this newsletter is a focus on the job search! Having a counseling intern this semester has connected me personally to all that summer brings: She will be out searching for jobs, then interviewing and finally working as a new school counselor. This month’s articles support not only new school counselors, but others that are returning to the workforce as a school counselor and need to navigate all these processes.

I hope you will enjoy your summer, find time to grow and time to take care of yourself whatever the summer looks like for us. Stay safe and well.
