President’s Letter: Time to Reset and Recharge

By Melanie Hayes | April 2020

Wow...what a crazy world we live in. I want to first say thank you all for rising to the occasion and supporting your students, families, colleagues and beyond during this difficult time. I know that virtual school counseling is not what we all set out to do but I have to commend the actions of those around me! At my district, our state level, in this region and even at the national level (thanks to ASCA organizing state leader meetups for support), I saw school counselors all over this nation rise to the occasion and switch gears to support students, families, teachers and their communities! Let me tell you, it was awesome to watch and be a part of.

Now more than ever it is vital that you reset and recharge over the summer. We have a big task ahead of us transitioning students back into the classroom, and we aren’t even certain as I write this when that may be. But one thing is certain: our students will need us more than ever. I encourage you to push for the creation of a transition team, whether at your building, district or state level. Special care should be given to meeting students where they are when they return – not just academically but emotionally.

To be your best for your students, step one is to take care of you. This time of isolation has been very overwhelming for us all. Make sure that you are practicing healthy coping strategies and taking time for yourself as often as you can. Get outside when possible and breathe fresh air! Stretch and clear your mind through yoga, guided meditation or a nice walk. Get organized and plan some great return-to-school activities. We all reduce stress in different ways, but being prepared for what lies ahead will not only help you lower your own stress and anxiety, but will empower you to help others do the same.

Rest. Recharge. Return ready!
