From the Chair: SEL Gives Skills for Life

By Heather Williams | May 2026

I am continually inspired by the work school counselors across our state are doing to support the whole child. Social/emotional learning (SEL) remains a critical part of that mission. How can we can continue strengthening our approach to best serve our students?

Recent feature stories from the American School Counselor Association highlight an important shift, one that aligns closely with the work many of you are already leading in your schools. One of the most impactful ways to deepen student engagement with SEL is by connecting these competencies to real-world employability skills. When students understand how communication, collaboration and problem solving translate into future career success, SEL becomes more relevant and meaningful. As school counselors, we are uniquely positioned to help students make these connections.

We know that intentional, data-informed practices lead to better outcomes. Incorporating evidence-based SEL strategies into behavior interventions allows us to move from reactive responses to proactive support. This approach not only addresses immediate concerns but also equips students with lifelong skills in self-awareness, self-management and responsible decision making.

Family engagement remains a powerful tool in reinforcing SEL. Hosting an SEL Family Night creates opportunities to partner with caregivers, share practical strategies and model ways to support students at home. These events strengthen the connection between school and home, ensuring that students receive consistent support in developing essential social and emotional skills.

One of our most important goals is to help students build resilience. By fostering safe and supportive environments and explicitly teaching coping strategies, we empower students to navigate challenges, manage stress and build healthy relationships. Emotional resilience is a critical skill that will serve them well throughout their lives.

The work you do each day is making a lasting difference. As we continue to strengthen our SEL efforts, let us remain focused on practical application, evidence-based practices and meaningful partnerships with families. Together, we are equipping students with the skills they need to thrive in school and beyond.

Thank you for the difference you make every day in the lives of our students.
