From the Chair: The Time Is Now

How are you, esteemed school counselor, taking charge of change? If you were one of the 1,500 who attended the sold-out CASC Conference & Expo on October 19–20, 2023, you were presented with workshops, speakers, exhibitors and other opportunities that put that question into perspective. As a school counselor, you are at the forefront of change each day, proven through your unwavering dedication to your students and their success. Your role is pivotal in shaping the future of your students. Each student is unique, with their own aspirations, strengths and challenges.

In addition to your day-to-day responsibilities, staying updated on the latest research and practices is another way of taking charge of change and participating in professional development may enhance your counseling skills and knowledge. If you were unable to attend the CASC Conference in October, we highly recommend that you register early and attend the 2024 Northern California CASC Conference in Monterey. As you explore this issue of The California School Counselor, you will find that the theme of “College Bound” is evident throughout, with articles addressing college planning, NCAA eligibility, holding a College and Career Success Week, and more. Our featured article by Paul Meyers discusses revised Policy 6164.2, which leverages support for comprehensive school counseling programs. The revision process was led and supported by Dr. Loretta Whitson. It is important to be aware of the changes to Board Policy 6164.2, so please take a moment to read the article.
