CSCA Achievements 2016-2017

Last year was an exciting year for CSCA. We had many accomplishments to be proud of, including but not limited to the following:
  • Tolland/Windham County Roundtable held at ECSU: Topic was Counselor Evaluations; 24 in attendance (September)
  • CSCA members participated in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention walk in East Hartford, raising over $3,000 (October)
  • CSCA Government Relations committee members met with Rep. Gayle Mulligan, Rep. Jeff Currey, Laura Stefon and John Frassinelli of the Department of Education (October)
  • CSCA Mixer and Membership Drive held at Haight-Brown Vineyard in Litchfield; 40+ in attendance (November)
  • CSCA Hartford Roundtable/PD held at Pathways Academy of Technology & Design: Topic was Collecting Data for your School Counseling Program; 100 in attendance (November)
  • “A Power of a Teacher: For School Counselors” professional development held in conjunction with Porter & Chester Institute at their new Waterbury campus; 49 in attendance (December)
  • CSCA New London/Middlesex Roundtable held at Mitchell College; 50+ in attendance (December)
  • Joint letter from CACES and CSCA to Kim Traverso at the state Department of Education regarding a proposed amendment to state regulation 10-145d-556.a - time spent in school counseling internship for graduate students (December)
  • Second dchool in Connecticut, Shepaug Valley School, awarded RAMP recognition and classified by ASCA as one of the top 10 schools, making them a “School of Distinction” (December)
  • CSCA New Counselor Symposium held at Goodwin College; 50+ in attendance (January)
  • CSCA Tolland/Windham County Roundtable: Topic “Helping Students Realize Their Potential” held at ECSU (February)
  • CSCA “Creating a K-12 Culture of College & Career Readiness” held at SCSU in conjunction with the SCSU Education Department; 125 in attendance (February)
  • CSCA annual conference, “School Counselors in a Changing World,” held at the University of New Haven; 325 in attendance (March)
  • Jesse Shalett of John Read Middle School in Redding was named Connecticut School Counselor of the Year for 2017 (March)
  • CSCA Hartford County PD: Topic was Google Tools & School Data; 25+ in attendance (May)
  • CSCA Litchfield County PD: “Choosing Love: Social Emotional Learning Curriculum,” with Scarlett Lewis, held at Albertus Magnus College; 70+ in attendance (May)


We are looking forward to another exciting year for CSCA. We have several professional development opportunities in the works, as well as our annual conference that will be held at the University of Hartford on Thursday March 22, 2018, so save the date! Our conference theme is “Stronger Together for Student Success” and will feature “Power of a Teacher” keynote speaker Adam Saenz (pictured).

CSCA continues to strive to provide quality professional development, a sense of identity, and advocacy for school counselors as we move into this 2017-2018 school year.
