This summer in Boston NvSCA celebrated its 45th anniversary as a division of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). At the Leadership Development Institute and Delegate Assembly two days prior to the start of the ASCA Conference, Keeli Killian (NvSCA President), Kristin Barnson (past president) and I were honored to accept Nevada’s Certificate of Recognition for 45 years as an association. Our two days at the Leadership Development Institute provided us the opportunity to network and share ideas with other state association leaders. As a result, we were able to create an action plan to benefit all Nevada school counselors and our association.

It is essential for us to grow as school counselors and enhance our comprehensive school counseling programs. The professional development offered through school counseling conferences, whether at the state or national level, is an excellent way to achieve this. At the ASCA conference in Boston, I was inspired by the thousands of school counselors in attendance. Counselors from around the country and world had gathered in one place to learn about strategies, programs and resources they could implement to improve their school counseling programs. Sixteen school counselors represented Nevada well at the conference. We proudly displayed the Nevada flag during roll call, and shared our successes/challenges during presentations, focus groups and the RAMP fair. During evening hours, we exchanged ideas while we explored historic Boston. For me, the ASCA conference expanded my knowledge of our profession and strengthened friendships with other professionals who understand what I do every day for students. I encourage you to experience firsthand the benefits of attending a school counseling conference. Please join us for the 2020 NvSCA Conference March 6–7 in Reno or the ASCA 2020 Conference June 27–30 in Seattle. I look forward to seeing you there.
