Grow Our Program by Focusing on Current Issues

By Cynthia Walley | August 2020

The New York State School Counselor Association (NYSSCA) was awarded a Gates Foundation grant to increase school counselor participation in policy discussions about student needs. We have been developing and facilitating several advocacy activities to support K–12 students around the state of New York regarding their access to tools necessary for distance learning and opportunities to benefit from fully funded educational programs. Although these efforts have been stymied by COVID-19, we are pressing on in our search for innovative ways to reach and connect with school counselors, allies and policy leaders in the State of New York.

Use your voice and get involved in a NYSSCA committee. Our committees focus on public relations, marketing, professional development, technology, advocacy and public policy. If you are interested, please contact me at president@nyssca.org; I will get you connected.

Another source of support in these challenging times is counselor education programs. Their expertise on topics such as cultural competency, racism, infectious diseases and more can aid you in your reopening process. School counselor education programs are looking to collaborate with districts, schools, and school counselors to create innovative and meaningful strategies and interventions for students in K–12 settings. Programs are often are looking to partner for field experiences and can be helpful as you develop and implement your comprehensive school counseling program.

On November 12–14, 2020, the NYSSCA annual conference will take place at Turning Stone Convention Center on the Oneida Nation in Verona, NY. Similar to the issues experienced by African American and Latinx communities, Indigenous communities face many health and educational disparities. School counselors can create culturally responsive environments that are inclusive of all persons of color.

The conference theme is Innovation through Collaboration today the need to collaborate, to share ideas and solutions, is greater than ever. I am excited that we have many social/emotional topics and sessions on social justice, equity and anti-racism so that we can continue to learn, share, and lead during these times. We will also benefit from the focus on wellness and family that the resort provides. View complete conference information, including keynotes and registration.
