From the Chair: The Opportunities in This Year

By Kimberly D. Brown | September 2024

As we step into a new school year, I am filled with anticipation and optimism for the journey ahead. On behalf of the Palmetto State School Counselor Association (PSSCA) Board of Directors, I extend a warm welcome to each of you as we embrace our theme for this issue: Fresh Start.

The beginning of a new school year always brings with it a sense of renewed energy and possibility. It’s an opportunity for us all to hit the reset button and set new goals, not just for our students but for ourselves as well. This fresh start is more than a change of dates on the calendar; it’s an opportunity to reignite our passion for school counseling and supporting our students as they grow and develop through their academic and personal journeys.

As school counselors, we know that our work is essential. This year, as you embark on your daily tasks, please do not never forget the profound impact you have on your students' lives. Your direction and instruction both provide them with the tools they need to navigate their challenges and celebrate their victories. Embrace this new year with enthusiasm and valor. Every encounter is a chance for growth, every student interaction is a chance to make a difference. Your innovative ideas, commitment to student well-being and unwavering support will continue to change the story in your school and community.

PSSCA is committed to supporting you every step of the way. This year, we are excited to offer a range of resources and opportunities designed to empower and assist you:
  1. Professional Development: “Be the Difference: School Counselors for Diversity, Equity, and Justice” is the 2025 PSSCA Annual Conference Theme. We are excited to meet you on beautiful Hilton Head Island, January 23–25, 2025. The conference will cover best practices in school counseling, providing you with fresh strategies and insights to enhance your practice.
  2. Resource Access: We will continue to provide a wealth of resources on the PSSCA website and newsletters, including toolkits, templates and guidelines tailored to meet the diverse needs of your students and your practice.
  3. Advocacy and Support: We are here to advocate on your behalf and provide support for any challenges you may face. Your concerns and feedback are vital to us, and we are dedicated to addressing them promptly and effectively.
As you move through the beginning of this school year, please do not forget that we are all in this together, and our collective strength is unparalleled. We extend to you wishes for a year of new beginnings, meaningful connections and continued growth. May your efforts be met with success, and may you find joy and fulfillment in every step of your journey. Thank you for your incredible work and commitment to our students. Let’s make this school year our best yet!
