President’s Letter: Looking Ahead with Hope

By Rhonda Harper | April 2020

Hello, NMSCA members! I hope this newsletter finds you and your loved ones healthy.

Welcome to the end of another school year! What a strange year it has been so far. I extend a warm thank you for being flexible and for holding your community together. I know how hard it has been to work remotely. For school counselors, social distancing is difficult! We want to see our students. We worry about how they are doing. We worry about what they are doing! We worry about our teachers and administrators. We want to see people. We want to look at their faces and read what’s really going on. So, thank you for being flexible and for working with technology in ways we never thought we would have to! Yes, the last couple of months have been tough. However, we did it! You did it!!

And now we move into summer. As I write this, we don’t know yet what summer will be like. I am hoping to still be able to attend the ASCA conference at the end of June. I am hoping NMSCA will be able to meet at the beginning of June to have our annual Board Crossover meeting. But if those things don’t happen, we will figure it out (as we always do) and we will continue our self-care and begin preparing for another school year.

As I reflect on my year as NMSCA president, we did some amazing things! First, we moved away from being a division of NMCA. However, the preparation for the split started long before I became president. We now have our own membership database and can send out information more quickly. We now have our own website that is linked with our database – check it out here. Next year we will be in an even better position to support you. I sincerely hope you will join the board and help us move forward

I thank everyone on the NMSCA Board this past year. I was lucky enough to work with a group of amazing, dedicated professionals and I can’t wait to see what next year holds.

Have a wonderful summer and enjoy the time with family and friends!
