School Counseling in a Virtual School Setting
With advancing technology, virtual schools are becoming more widespread. Hear about the online educational landscape, including common reasons students choose to attend virtual schools. Explore how various technologies are utilized in virtual school settings to students’ academic, career and social/emotional needs and how to implement comprehensive school counseling programs in virtual school settings.

  1. Describe the landscape related to school counseling in a virtual school, including the types of programs and schools available to students
  2. Identify and discuss the technologies available to deliver a comprehensive school counseling program across the four ASCA domains in a virtual educational setting
  3. Describe recent research on how school counselors in all settings are using online technologies to meet students’ needs
  4. Identify the benefits and limitations inherent in an online counseling environment, including the use of protocols to address urgent situations that may occur in virtual school settings
Tracy Steele is the director of counseling at Stanford Online High School ( The school counseling office at the OHS provides students with academic, career and personal school counseling and works to support students’ social/emotional development. Steele earned a Ph.D. in psychological studies in education with an emphasis in child and adolescent development from Stanford University and holds two master's degrees, in school counseling and guidance and in secondary teaching.
