February and National School Counseling Week brought a flurry of activity for Nebraska School Counselors and NSCA.
On Friday, February 2, Jacqueline Johnson was recognized as a semi-finalist for National School Counselor of the Year at a black-tie gala at Union Station in Washington, D.C. In the photo below, Johnson is pictured receiving her award flanked by Dr. Richard Wong, ASCA executive director, and Julie Hill, Chair of the ASCA Board of Directors. Johnson is a school counselor Omaha Northwest High Magnet School and was the 2017 Nebraska School Counselor of the Year.
On Thursday, February 8, Angela Kruse was announced as the 2018 Nebraska School Counselor of the Year in a surprise ceremony in front of students and staff at Columbus Middle School. Jerry Wiggins, NSCA president, presented the trophy to Kruse (see photo, below). The presentation was followed by a reception for Columbus Middle School Staff sponsored by NSCA. Local media covered the event that provided positive exposure for both Kruse and the school counseling profession. Kruse was named Nebraska Middle School Counselor of the Year this past November at the NSCA School Counselor Academy and served as president of the Nebraska School Counselor Association for the 2014-15 school year.
On Tuesday, February 6, Governor Pete Ricketts signed a proclamation recognizing the week of February 5 as School Counseling Week in Nebraska at a ceremony in the Werner Chamber of the State Capital. Brenda Leggiadro delivered remarks about the value of school counselors and the school counselor profession.
The month of February concluded with Bethany Seehusen being announced as president-elect-elect of the NSCA Governing Board for 2018-2019. Seehusen is in her second year as a school counselor at Columbus High School. Prior to that she served as a Language Arts instructor at Monroe Middle School in Omaha. She is looking forward to serving the profession as a member of the NSCA board and to the personal and professional growth that comes from being involved with NSCA.
