“It’s Operational” – May 2026

By Dr. LaWanda R. Felder-Myers | May 2026

Students and Resiliency Education

As spring unfolds, we’re reminded that this season represents renewal, growth and possibility. Just as nature begins to bloom, our students continue to develop in ways that require intentional care and support. In our schools, resiliency education remains essential, helping students build the skills they need to succeed academically and thrive in life.

This month’s theme encourages us to take a fresh look at how we support the whole child. As education evolves, so must our approach. Insights from the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) challenge us to strengthen our practices in meaningful, relevant ways.

In this issue, you’ll find strategies for aligning resiliency education with employability skills, reinforcing real-world readiness while supporting student development. We also highlight the use of evidence-based practices within behavior interventions, ensuring our work is both effective and grounded in research. Additionally, we explore ways to engage families in resiliency education, strengthening the connection between school and home.

Like spring, this work requires patience and persistence. Your dedication helps create environments where students feel supported, empowered and prepared to grow – now and in the seasons ahead.

Warm regards,
Dr. LaWanda R. Felder-Myers, Executive Director, PSSCA

PSSCA Affinity Groups

We are currently seeking middle and high school facilitators for our PSSCA affinity groups. If you are interested in serving, please contact Dr. LaWanda Felder-Myers at lawandafelder47@gmail.com.

The Core Purposes of School Counselor Affinity Groups

  1. Professional Support & Connection
Affinity groups reduce isolation by allowing school counselors to connect with peers who share similar lived or professional experiences.
  2. Psychological Safety
These groups offer a confidential, judgment-free space where school counselors can speak openly, process challenges, and reflect honestly – something not always possible in larger, mixed groups.
  3. Identity Affirmation & Belonging
Affinity groups validate school counselors’ identities and experiences, reinforcing that they are seen, valued and respected within the profession.
  4. Skill Sharing & Collective Wisdom
Participants exchange strategies, resources and practical solutions that are context-specific and immediately applicable to their work.
  5. Wellness & Burnout Prevention
By fostering connection, affirmation and peer care, affinity groups support school counselor wellness – aligning directly with ethical self-care and sustainability in the role.
  6. Leadership & Advocacy Development
Affinity spaces often surface shared concerns and strengths that can inform advocacy efforts, leadership pipelines and system-level change within districts or associations.
