Equity for Our Native American/American Indian Students

During the 2019 South Dakota Legislature Session, SB126 was passed. This legislation made the three dialects of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ – Lakota, Nakota and Dakota – the official Indigenous languages of South Dakota!

South Dakota has nine federally recognized tribes: 
  • Sisseton and Wahpeton Sioux Tribe of Lake Traversie Reservation
  • Ihanktonwan Nation or Yankton Sioux Tribe
  • Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe
  • Standing Rock Sioux Tribe
  • Crow Creek Sioux Tribe
  • Rosebud Sioux Tribe (Sicangu Oyate)
  • Kul Wicasa Oyate or Lower Brule Tribe
  • Oglala Lakota of the Pine Ridge Reservation
  • Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe of the Cheyenne River Reservation

SDNACA Information
  • Membership is open to ANY school counselor working with Native American youth (no Native ancestry required).  If you work with students in SD, this probably includes YOU!
  • You can join if you are working with Indigenous populations in a school, college, university, agency, private practice, and so on! You do need to be a member of SDCA to join SDNACA.
